Consider the catalyst of this story, Poseidon, who is nearly always referred to as ‘black-maned’¹ or The Dark-Haired One.

It is easy to visualise seaweed as an anthropomorphic representation of this god, wherein it appears black from the surface of deep bodies of water, & flows in currents like locks of hair.
